InDesign One: an introduction to InDesign

This is an introductory course intended for people who have never used Adobe InDesign before. On completion of the course, delegates should be able to produce in-house publications, advertisements, and other artwork, with an understanding of how to effectively combine and layout photographs, graphics and text.

Working knowledge of InDesign is often a requirement now for designers seeking work. This course will give a practical and realistic guide to using InDesign in a commercial setting.

Delegates completing this course are invited to progress to InDesign Two.


Course Overview:

The InDesign Workspace and Preferences.

Getting to know InDesign, a quick but detailed trip through a document.

Setting up InDesign documents correctly, managing page numbering and using multiple page sizes in a document.

Using objects, frames and guides, placing text and images.

Using drawing tools nd creating artwork in InDesign.

Flowing and editing text, learning about type.

Using colour, images, logos and photographs, understanding resolution and exploring transparency,

Printing and exporting from InDesign.


Learning Objectives:

Upon completing this course, delegates should have a basic proficiency in a range of skills pertaining to publication design, including the usage of typography, colour, layout, pictures, graphics, styles and producing a print-ready PDF.

I've been drawing
pictures, designing
publications and
showing other
people how to do
the same as long
as I can remember.

I've been both a freelancer and employed in these capacities over the last 30 years, in which time I have gained a lot of experience in print, digital publishing and media.

I graduated with a LCAD in Surface Design from Chelsea School of Art London in 1976.

I am currently self-employed as a freelance designer and am a lecturer at City of Bath College and Bath Spa University.
